A New issue of Honest Mag, A New Year & More
Feathery crystals are drifting down from the sky. The trees and banks surrounding our river are blanketed, the front steps are treacherous and the dogs can't stop freaking out over the fantastically fun white stuff.
Sunday we hauled our little old forester to one of the many u-cuts (we live in the land of Christmas Tree Farms I like to say), and sawed away until the prickly pine needles came crashing down on our heads.
It's that time of year. Maybe my favorite time of year. And in-between shoots and holidays we have been skiing every second we can manage.
Besides play, I've been up to quite a few new projects since my last post, another issue of Honest Magazine is out (announcing a new theme for the year), and a number of new books have been photographed, designed, edited and made their way to shelves!

A study of flour, water, salt & yeast, the Winter issue of Honest Mag, "TIME," focuses on four simple ingredients and their history through time, subtle alterations in recipe and method, and variance and similarity across the world. Learn how to make Bavarian Pretzels the traditional way (dipped in a bath of food-grade lye), roll paper thin carta da musica flatbreads (Sardinian Flatbreads), and snuggle in Christmas morning with homey glazed cinnamon rolls. Headnotes sprinkle history and helpful tips while the bakery guide provides you with the world's most delicious spots for baked goods. If there is something more influential in the history of food then bread, I've yet to discover it.
The Big Book of Organic Baby Food
This turned out to be such a fun book to work on. Sometimes it's a wonderful refresh when your thrown a project a bit different than what's typical and you are forced to think creatively in a new way all over again. I had a blast working on this book- the fun, bright colors and spunk feel energizing and motivating. Recipes begin with newborn options, lots of purees, moving into combinations and beginning to introduce baby to new flavors and textures before ending with meals the whole family can enjoy. Recipes are easy and nutritious, focusing on prep and make-ahead to make mealtime easy and worry free. Written by Stephanie Middleberg MS, RD, CDN and published by Rockridge Press. Zoodles Spiralizer Cookbook
Zoodles! Man, we have done a handful of spiralizer projects! This trend has really taken off and for good reason. Replacing carbs with vegetables is a pretty much an all around agreeable idea in terms of health benefits. People have a blast whipping different fruits and vegetables into "zoodles" (noodles made of produce with the spiralizer), for pastas, fruit salads, in soups and more. Published by Rockridge Press and written by Sonnet Lauberth, Zoodles is a top-ranking book with 5 star reviews. Thanks to Caroline and Adam for their vision and design!

Clean Eating Bowls
I don't know if there's much more satisfying than a big bowl wrapped round some healthy grains stacked with mounds of fresh vegetables and moist protein, and finished with a tangy sauce. If I started every day with a green smoothie, every lunch with a healthy bowl and ended with a classic French dinner, I'd be the happiest, healthiest person on the planet. This burrito bowl is seriously good (seriously!). And I absolutely devoured it once the shoot was over. I really think this is a fantastic book for anyone looking to eat healthy and balanced on the regular without sacrificing taste or the feeling of being full. Thanks once again to Katy and Christine for their teamwork and direction in this shoot!

Juicing For Beginners
I wish I had these glasses in front of me right now (all three of them). I think I'd down them instantly. Juicing has been a major food trend for a number of years now and this book is a great introduction into the world of juicing and DIY juicing at home. Knowing what compliments what, the nutritional benefits and tips for starting out makes this book an excellent guide to decoding the often confusing lingo. Containing 100 recipes, including such tantalizing titles as "Pomegranate Peach Detox Blend" and "Mango Tango Green Juice," drinks are fun and easy to make. The Medical Marijuana Dispensary
I must admit, it felt a little nuts to use my business card to purchase Marijuana at the dispensary! But as you probably know Marijuana is legal in Washington state for both medicinal and recreational use and more and more legal across the country every passing day. This book is refreshing to me as a clean, refined, more grown up book for learning about, using, and cooking with Marijuana. Evidence based and research supported, authors Laurie and Mary Wolf have also provided medical guidelines, lists of ailments, symptoms and conditions in the index and real world patient testimonials. Nola's lovely eye for design and Althea Press made this book really come together.

The No-Fuss Bread Machine Cookbook
My husband and I have this joke about bread. There's a commercial (maybe you've seen it), of Oprah speaking about Weight Watchers. "I. Love. Bread." she says. "I. Eat. Bread. Every. Single. Day." This book is the easiest way ever to make a loaf. The machine lets you vary the darkness of the crust and adjust according to the size and type of bread (recipes let you know which settings to use). Everything from Soft Egg Bread to English Muffin Bread to Crusty French Bread. I was quite impressed with the loafs a bread machine puts out (fluffy and light!), and "no-fuss" is definitely the right description here. Aromatherapy for Natural Living
This shoot smelled amazing. Two diffusers, a giant peony, lavender and essential oils? One might have a hard time staying awake. These little machines are quite the nifty invention. Set on one your work desk/bedroom dresser/bookshelf and let it slowly and consistently disperse a light, scented steam with the essential oil of your choice. Aromatherapy for Natural Living explains the mystery behind essential oils, with recipes, information and explanations of how each oil actually works. It is quite a nice thing to have going nearby. Healthy Smoothie Recipe Book
I was first introduced to Jennifer Koslo and her multitudes of smoothie recipes in her first smoothie book that I photographed (The 21 Day Healthy Smoothie Plan), where I learned pretty much every single thing there is to know about smoothies, and have been a true convert ever since. I actually consider smoothies the one and only shortcut in life and just can't say enough good things about them or Jennifer's smoothie books. Pick it up! It's probably the most useful, applicable cookbook you could buy. Thanks to Nola for her exceptional eye here.

The Enchantingly Easy Persian Cookbook
This was a new project for me with this publisher. The author, Shadi HasanzadeNemati, flew out to Seattle (from Boston) to cook, oversee and be the Persian bank of knowledge on this project. Shadi (author of the popular blog unicorns in the kitchen), is originally from Iran (often referred to under it's former name of Persia), and brought with her her many Persian recipes and gentle humor. I love Shadi's approach to cooking in that she takes fun and pleasure seriously and, unlike some cooks, believes in adjusting things to suit your particular taste. The food was delicious (I was lucky to get many lunches and leftovers from Shadi), comforting and beautiful and I can't wait to make some of my favorites (Persian Jeweled Rice being one of them), myself at home.
